Background of the Study
Extreme heat events are increasing in frequency and intensity worldwide, and Kano State is no exception. Rising temperatures, prolonged heatwaves, and unpredictable weather patterns, which are often linked to climate change, have significant health implications for residents. In Kano State, extreme heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and exacerbation of cardiovascular and respiratory conditions (Adamu, 2023). Vulnerable populations—particularly the elderly, young children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions—are at greater risk. Moreover, urban areas in Kano State, characterized by high population density and limited green spaces, experience the urban heat island effect, further amplifying heat exposure and its adverse impacts on health (Bello, 2023).
The direct health implications of extreme heat events include increased hospital admissions and mortality during heatwaves. Additionally, indirect effects such as reduced work productivity, impaired cognitive function, and heightened stress levels are becoming increasingly evident (Abubakar, 2024). Extreme heat also affects infrastructure and energy supply, leading to power outages that further compromise access to cooling mechanisms and healthcare services. The convergence of these factors creates a complex public health challenge that requires a multi-sectoral response.
Despite growing awareness of these issues, there is a paucity of localized research that comprehensively examines the health outcomes associated with extreme heat events in Kano State. Such research is essential for informing public health interventions, urban planning, and emergency preparedness strategies. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the health implications of extreme heat events in Kano State by analyzing morbidity and mortality data during heatwaves, assessing the capacity of healthcare systems to respond, and examining adaptive behaviors among residents. The findings are expected to guide policymakers in developing effective strategies for heat risk reduction and improving community resilience (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Kano State is increasingly experiencing extreme heat events that have led to significant health challenges. Despite the apparent rise in heat-related illnesses, there is insufficient systematic data on the specific health outcomes associated with these events. Healthcare facilities are often overwhelmed during periods of extreme heat, and many residents—especially vulnerable groups—lack adequate access to cooling and hydration, leading to a surge in heat-induced medical emergencies (Adamu, 2023). Furthermore, the urban heat island effect exacerbates these conditions in densely populated areas, while rural communities face additional challenges due to limited healthcare infrastructure.
The lack of comprehensive research on the health implications of extreme heat in Kano State hampers the development of targeted interventions. Public health policies and emergency response plans remain reactive rather than proactive, partly due to the absence of locally generated evidence linking extreme heat events with increased morbidity and mortality. In addition, socio-economic disparities further aggravate the situation, as poorer communities often have limited access to resources needed to mitigate heat exposure. Without clear data and analysis, policymakers are ill-equipped to allocate resources effectively or design preventive measures that address both immediate and long-term health risks associated with extreme heat (Bello, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on urban and rural areas of Kano State. Data will be collected from hospital records, meteorological data, and community surveys. Limitations include potential reporting biases and seasonal variability in heat events.
